Review - Salem Falls by Jodi Picoult

Long time fans of Jodi Picoult know what to expect at this stage. A likeable main character, a life ruining dilemma, court room drama and a surprising twist. It's her tried and tested formula and it usually works but I think it might also be the reason why I am beginning to tire of her books.

I found all of the characters just slightly annoying. Jack is a handsome young man who continually chose to become over involved with impressionable young girls at his previous school. Surely any adult, never mind an experienced teacher would know how easily young girls form crushes on older men. It was a disaster waiting to happen.

Addie come's across as a bright intelligent young woman yet she prevent herself from moving on in life by pretending her dead daughter is still alive. I just didn't by the whole imaginary friend thing.

I could see the ending coming a mile away. It was clear that Jack was just an outlet for an already troubled young girl to take her anger out on. I felt the outcome cheapened the story slightly

*Spoiler! Do not read ahead if you haven't read this book!*

I think it would have made for a much more interesting story if Jack had actually been guilty. The truth is that characters are often more interesting when they are going through the worst possible thing that could happen to them.
