Review:

As soon as I saw this on Netgalley I bashed the request button straight away! Another fantastic read from Katerina Diamond! She is fast becoming one of my favorite crime fiction writers.

The Secret is a two pronged effort. There are time jumps within the novel so it's a sequel to The Teacher but almost a prequel too. Saying that this can also be read as a stand alone. I know that sounds confusing, and it was a first. My reading pace was a little slower at the start as I tried to figure out what was going on in each time period. After a chapter or two though that settles down and takes off into a great story.

Imogen and Adrian are back in The Secret and we also hear from Bridget and a young boy who seems to be really disturbed due to the abuse handed down to him by his father. I think I l loved his chapters the most they showed how easily a child can grow to become a monster. I was disappointed when this character seemed to disappear near the end. This is something Katerina seems to do and I'm sure she has some sort of future diabolical plan in place for these elusive characters.

In The Teacher the event that led to her scar was only hinted on in The Teacher so it was interesting to read about what happened to her.

Talking of scars. The gore. THE GORE. I am loving the fact that Katerina doesn't hold back when it comes to violence. Crime is violent (especially the crimes in her books) and the fact that she goes all out adds to the authenticity in my opinion. I thought The Teacher was a little more graphic than The Secret but this it's still far from a fairy tale. I wish Katerina Diamond would write a book with Karin Slaughter. Imagine Katerina's taste for gore combined with Karin's love for forensics? Crime fiction heaven right there.

All of the characters in The Secret are well developed. There are no filler characters here and that's no easy feat. Every single character has a purpose that slots into this perfectly woven story. It kept me reading well past bed time every night.

The ending was fantastic. Another thing she has a talent for. She slips in pieces in the last few pages that blow the whole story apart. If book 3 was available I'd have started it right away. Nothing better than a book that leaves you wanting more!

A must for crime fiction fans.
