Go Book Yourself | 1/9/15

The story is about a man named Jacob(Jakes) Patrick Wallace who is sent back in time over various lifetimes. He thus carries knowledge of a global plague called the Husk plague, that causes people to go crazy and bloodthirsty, that will spread throughout the earth and that leaves only him with the power and knowledge to try and stop it.

Throughout the book he deals with various people in his life including a love interest named Julia Baldacci and his younger brother named Andy. This first book mainly sets the scene of the oncoming plague by giving glimpses of the future in 2017 etc but mainly plays out over a period starting from 1995 up to date. The ebola virus which ravaged west Africa during 2014 plays a central theme in the book and helps to set the pace of the oncoming plague.

The antagonist in the story is for the first part mainly played by a man called Rudansky who forms part of a larger group of people which is mainly referred to as the Company. The Company helps to set the scene for a larger worldwide conspiracy which dates back as far as the early 1600’s. With the VOC as the main background of this conspiracy, hence the settings in Amsterdam.

Jakes however also starts to develop certain abilities which helps him to be stronger, faster and even some psychic abilities which helps him throughout the book from time to time. Later in the book it becomes clearer that even the main antagonist Rudansky is merely a puppet for the bigger threat namely a man called Lord wittenheer who is the creator of the company and who has lived since the 1600’s.

Later in the book it also becomes clear that this man also happens to be the father of our main character unbeknownst to the main character though which is off course only revealed to him at the very ending of the book. The book ends with Jakes still in 2014 facing off against his father in a dream that he had, setting the scene for the second book which bring us closer to the release of the actual virus and the effect it will have on civilization, with the virus taking a equal but secondary role to jake’s main battle with the company who is still trying to reclaim the world as their own.

To never give up.

Keep your head up high. Walk up straight. Don’t bow your shoulders. Always be proud, but never arrogant. These words have been echoing throughout my life. The person whose voice is in the echo is the voice of my mother.

Many authors will tell you that the main protagonist is nothing like themselves. Seeing that 8th round is the first book that I ever wrote I hardly feel like the authority to tell otherwise. So I am not here to tell you what writing should be or feel like. So the only thing that I can tell you about is what I experienced while writing.

I have always had the urge to want to write a book. I have always felt that I didn’t have the time, nor the necessary skills to do so. One night I had a dream though. About a man who traveled back in time and each time that he does he has increased abilities and talents. With this dream in mind I decided to put it down on paper. Not knowing what the storyline would be or what I would even write on each successive page, I just sat down and started to write. On day one I wrote twenty pages.

Characters were brought into life that I never knew existed, storylines were created that I never even thought about before. But one thing that stood out to me was the personality of my protagonist. Because even though I did not want to admit it at first, the more I wrote the more I saw myself in the main character, namely Jakes. As the story continued, with not even myself knowing what will happen on the next page, I always tried to channel my own experiences and needs to achieve and to never give up, into the character of Jakes.

Throughout the book Jakes is confronted with obstacles that challenges his beliefs, integrity and even his sanity. Even though this book might be viewed as just another sci-fi/apocalyptic book, the readers will find that there is a lot more to the characters and the storyline and even a romantic subplot, than just monsters and time travel. There are various scenes where our protagonist will sit down with one of the other characters, where they will just discuss the challenges they face and which I believe will also help people in everyday. The way Jakes approaches the various subjects is not only useful when the world is about to end, but I believe can also be useful to use when it feels like your world is ending. So I hope that after you read this book, you will hear a mother’s voice saying, “Keep your head up high. Walk up straight. Don’t bow your shoulders and always be proud, but never arrogant.”
