A copy of The Safe Word was provided by the publisher in return for an honest review.

The Safe Word
Grips its readers from the very first page. I was hooked right from the beginning. The first chapter was really different, but in a good way.

Eleanor Raven is not your typical murder mystery novel detective. She has a dark and rather erotic side. In her work she is top dog, always in control but in her private life she seems to want to surrender all of that control. This made for really interesting reading. I’d never read anything like this in a crime novel before.

When a women is found dead, dangling form a chain in a warehouse it’s up to Eleanor to get to the bottom of it. The killer leads Eleanor and her team on a cat and mouse chase. Just when they think they’ve discovered something that will help them identify the killer a new curve ball is thrown.

The pace is fairly evenly fast the whole way through the book which kept me turning the pages. It kept me up late for more than a few nights.

The Safe Word reminds me of Karin Slaughter’s earlier novels. I think the characters have the same potential to grow and develop. I was really excited to learn that there is a follow up novel, The Vault and she is currently working on a third.

Detectives in crime novels often have a quirky trait or personality but Karen took this a step further with Eleanor. She is such an original character and I can’t wait to read the follow up.

I’d highly recommend The Safe word to any crime fiction fan.
