Captcha. It's the bain of my life. The one thing that really bugs me. The one thing that will stop me commenting on your blog.
There is nothing more frustrating than reading a really great blog post, typing out a thoughtful response only to a have Captcha pop up. Sometimes I type the damn words so many times before I just give up
Which has me wondering...
.....and leaves you with one less comment.
So you may be saying: " Well yeah great but I don't want spam all over my comments section"
Fear not, I have the answer.
1)Go to Blogger ---> Click on your blog name
2) Click on Settings
3) Click on posts and comments
4) Under who can comment click "registered user"
That's it.
That simple task has eliminated 100% of spam from my blog without hindering genuine readers and comments.
A lot of people of people probably all ready know this but for those who don't , use it and then turn off Captcha!

YES! Oh my, I just want to share this post with the world! Well, I kind of did, at least my little corner of Twitterverse. For several years now I've participated in Dewey's 24 Hour Readathon as a cheerleader. Some of the hoops that I have jumped through to leave a comment cheering on a fellow reader are not to be believed. When I was on Blogger I simply didn't allow Anoymous comments, which cut down almost all the spam. Wordpress has even more options. I don't mind clicking a box to confirm I'm not a robot, but it boggles my mind when someone has both Captcha and comment moderation on their site... of course, I don't have a huge following, so maybe spam is a bigger problem for some people. I still hope that between this and my begging on Twitter that come Saturday it will be known as the day that Captcha was turned off for 24 hours!
ReplyDeletehaha love it! Thanks for sharing this around!! Free the people! No more captcha!!
DeleteThats great!! Thanks for posting this.. I guess I didnt really think about the registered reader part... can you register as annonymous/guest?
ReplyDeleteNo I don't think so. These spam posts are usually bots so any sort of sign in sort of stops them in there tracks! It's worked for me anyway :) Thanks for reading!
DeleteOh, I so agree about Captcha!
ReplyDeleteI really wish it would just disappear!
DeleteYou can also require approval after a post has been live for a certain number of days, whatever number you choose. I find that the spammers seem to find my older posts. I hate captcha as well. I don't like to have it on my blog. I don't like it when I run into it on another's blog either.
ReplyDeleteSame here. It was always the same post they were targeting too! This seemed to stop it completely though. Approval is another good way although it means more work with actually having to go through posts
DeleteI had to share this on my twitter feed because this is PERFECT! You hit the nail on the head! thank you!!!
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing Johanna. Have a good week :)
DeleteThanks for sharing this with others. I already do this myself. I get frustrated at some of the captchas that pop up in a different window after you have left a message and then my comment is erased somehow. Most times I don't bother writing it again. Hope others read your post and agree.
ReplyDeleteWhat I do is eliminate the Anonymous peeps. I don't get as much spam but it's manageable. I will play with this setting, my only concern is I want to invite non-followers to leave comments too. Thanks for the tip!
